Physical approach to the marginalization of LIGO calibration uncertainties

The data from ground based gravitational-wave detectors such as Advanced LIGO and Virgo must be calibrated to convert the digital output of photodetectors into a relative displacement test masses in detectors, producing quantity interest for inference astrophysical gravitational wave sources. Both statistical uncertainties systematic errors are associated with calibration process, which would turn affect analysis detected sources, if not accounted for. Currently, source characterization algorithms either entirely neglect possibility or account them way that does use knowledge process itself. We present physiCal, new approach during step, directly uses all information available about instrument process. Rather than modeling overall detector's response function, we consider individual components contribute response. implement this method apply it compact binaries by second observation run, well simulated binary neutron stars sky position distance known exactly. find physiCal model performs currently used within LIGO-Virgo collaboration, but additionally enables improving measurement specific control through calibration.
